Don’t Let the Bed Bug Vendors Bite

Bed bugs have been and will continue to be a major topic for multifamily. By the numerous reports we see on a daily basis we appear to be going through a period where these little pests are proliferating and are becoming much more of a challenge to control. I received an email from Bryan Houtchens from Team Too Pest that I found very interesting. I asked him if I could share this info with my audience and he gave me his approval. The following is an excerpt of his message:

Attached is a news report for a bed bug treatment gone wrong, this is just one of many that have appeared in recent months. The exterminator in question was using forced air propane powered heaters which were originally designed for construction work and were modified in the mid 90’s for treatment of termites in homes. Since that time numerous homes have had fires caused or serious damage related to the treatments. About 5 years ago we completely abandoned the technology to go with a much safer and more114364501 157x300 Don’t Let the Bed Bug Vendors Bite reliable system for delivering the heat process. Since 2001 we have worked with two companies in particular to develop technology that safely and effectively eliminates bed bugs within structures without the concern or lack of control that is common place with the use of propane powered heaters.

I thought I would share this to show what happens when using a less than experienced company; we are seeing numerous complaints of companies that just became involved with bed bugs, and even more issues with companies that are now targeting multifamily as their new “cash cow”. I am personally saddened by the attempt of the pest management industry to highlight and prey upon the needs of your communities.

Whoever you choose to use for your bed bug control, be sure to check out what methods they are using. There are always smooth folks out there who love jumping on the cash cow bandwagon, of course promising lower prices. This is certainly not a matter to be taken lightly.
